As we are reading poetry and looking at various parts of poems, can you notice some of the same figurative language in your independent reading? Using your notes from this week, give examples of each of the parts of figurative language we've been discussing. You may not find all types. If you can’t find any, look at the poem you put on the moodle or the lyrics to your favorite song.
In my book Witch & Wizard by James Patterson, I have noticed that their is a lot of figurative language. As I was reading I found simile's, metaphor's, personification, and idiom's. One simile that I have found was on page 170 it stated ' My body began to shake like I was being tossed around in the back of a horse drawn cart barreling down a cobblestone road at 55mph.' Two metaphor's I had found were on page 168 and 169. They had stated ' My heart leaped.' and ' Deathly yellow eye's.' One personification I had found was on page 164. It had said ' You did this to me.' said the weasel 'you taught a weasel how to talk?!' Said Sasha. The last thing I had found was an idiom. I found this on page 170. It had said "Earsplitting shriek of anger.'

Week 4 11.29.10 - 12.3.10
We've been looking and studying how we relate to our characters and the real world around us. Now it's time to put yourself into your character's shoes. Thinking about the main character of your book, consider what you would do in their situation. 1. What would your reactions be? 2. How would you handle the situation? 3. What would you do differently? Be sure to use complete sentences and EVIDENCE to support your thinking.

The name of the book that I'm reading is Witch & Wizard by: James Patterson. The main character of my book is 1: Whit and 2: Wisty. Something that I would have done differently in Whits shoes would be this...
In the book on page 150 it Say's "Watch out!" I screamed. " Right behind you!'
First of all I would have been panicking and scared and crying and screaming. " GET THE HELL IN THE PORTAL WITSY." Instead of being focused on whats going on behind her. If
I do this I might have been afraid that it would of made her panicky and then she could of tripped or something. This is what I would of done in Whits shoes.
Something that I would have done differently in Wisty's shoes would be this...
In the book on page 114 it Say's "I trust you're enjoying your stay at the hospital?" " Fantastic!" I said- couldn't resist. " Five stars."
Now instead of being all rude I would have been calm and tryed to hold all my anger in. Then later on in my cell I would let all that anger out. Then I would be brusque on the poor judges opinion. No offence. I would have said noting. I would have sat their and wanted until I was called on. I mean so would you if you were in jail and in front of the person who decides your fate. Life or Death?

The book that I felt I should do this on is my second book I'm reading Miss Fortune, by Ruth Ames. My book is basically about a female vampire who name is Claire and who is also around the age of 13. She is your typically girl when it comes to school. She has her typically bully or should I say bullies, and her typically best friend. I the scene that I'm at right now they are all getting ready for their Halloween party at school. I know this for two reasons. 1: 'The halls swarmed with witches and wizards and more.' (Page 5) 2: 'They think their costumes are oh so sexy." Say's Emma.' (Page 8) Clarie has a best friend who's name is Emma. Claire and Emma doing everything together and they also stick up for each other.
I had many connections to my book that it wasn't even funny. In the book she is talking about her school bullies. I noticed that our school has bullies and then I thought some more and noticed that the whole world has some type of bully. I know how she feels because I have been bullied throughout my life also. It's not that fun. Not at all. Then again in the book and in life their will always be bullies. No matter what you do. Noting will change unless they change.
An inference that I had made to my book is that Claire and Emma would soon concede to the so called popular girls. I think this because, when the popular girls had walked into the dance at the school. Everyone had turned their heads in fascination at their beautiful costumes. At the dance their is going to be a costume competition. So due to the fact that everyone their loves their costumes. I believe that they might be chosen 3 years in arrow for schools greatest costume.

Question time. 11/9/10 week 1
Lizzy, You seem really interested in your book, but what things about the book do you like the most? Bryan
My book Witch & Wizard by Stephen King is yeah really awesome. But what I like the most about my book is the two character's whit and wisty. They always use team work in any situation.(113) "I'm sorry, but he left, Matron," We said forcing ourselves to sound respectful. Now that is team work. I also like the fact that they give each other complements. (130) "My sister- WOW! Dang you're good," Whit told her. "Yep," She agreed. " I'm a bad scary witch, all right." It's just so cool how the can be so sarcastic in the times that they are in too. (56) "WOW, Is that for me? Why thank you!!" Whit said as the new order matron brought them there handcuffs. I also like it when they have to do disgusting jobs and make fun out of it just by singing. (103) I DIPPED THE TOOTHBRUSH in the gray-watered toilet and scrubbed another inch of floor. I was sing as if I had lost my mind, and probably I had. "I've been working on the railroad, all the live long day."These are only a couple of reasons on why I love this book. It is so interesting in so many ways. So there's another reason on why I like the book. A real world example would be me and my cousions life because we feel that we have been put away in a jail for who we are. Just like whit and wisty. We also make eachother feel good about ourselfs and we will always and for ever stick up for eachother and love eachother just like the characters in my book.

I love the fact that Whit and whitsy are no they afraid of the place that they are in and how they are determined to get out of the place that they call a hell hole. I also like the fact that there is a lot of action going on in my book.

10-15-10 Book Blog
It is important for readers to understand what is happening in their books, who the characters are and what the theme is. In your response, outline the following: Plot, Setting, Characters, and Universal Theme. Provide evidence to support your thinking from your book.
The book I'm reading is 'Witch & Wizard' by:James Patterson. The plot of my book would be two kids (Whit and Wisty) Get taken into a new thing called 'The New Order.' They have been excused of having amazing powers and get sent to jail (chapter 1). In the jail they find out that they do have strange unusual cool powers (chapter 30). The go through trouble of trying to escape this Hell hole due to the fact that they will be exacted the next day. Then they begen to see Celia (Whit's girlfriend who mysteriously disappeared.) She tells them that they need to escape some how. So she has a plan. She will take them into the shadow land. This is the only possible way out. But they have to risk the fact that they could be trapped there forever (chapter 51). The setting of my book would have to be the shadow land. They have no idea what time it is due to the fact that the Sky's are gray. The shawdowland is full of spirits who haven't fully passed over. The characters in my book at this point of time would be Whit, Wisty, and Celia. The universal theme of my book would have to be 'HOW SOCIETY ACTS OR REACTS.' I think this because in life our society reacts to criminals by placing them in jail, and people if they know they are going to be killed they will react to this. This is exactly what is happening in my book.

The plot in my book right now would be it is some time at night. I would say around midnight. Katrina Katrell is with her guardian in a subway. I would say that my book takes place in the time that we are in right now. I say this because everyone has a imagination and some kind of little wold of their own. No where in my book does it say what time period we aer in. So This is what I think. My only characters in the book would be Katrina Katrell, her guardian, and the little creature she keeps on seeing in the dark that won't stop winking at her.(page 3) Next I would say that the universal theme would have to be human nature. This is because we all see things and we all imagine things it's just something that is programed in our brains I guess.

Imagine you wake up and the world around you-life as you know it-has changed in an instant. That's what has happened to Whit Allgood and his sister, Witsy. They went to sleep as normal teenagers, and woke up as wanted criminals. Accused of holding incredible powers they'd never dreamed possible. And now, just how different they are-special, even-if just beginning to be revealed in a strange new world. It begins...now.
The book 'Witch & Wizard by James Patterson' takes place at home and then straight to 'The New Order' (A jail for what some call the supernatural.). The Antagonist of the story world be the guards for the new order and the police for the new order. The protagonist of the story at this point would be Whit, Witsy, the mom, and the dad. The main characters are Whit and Witsy at this point in my book. The universal theme of my book would be 'HOW SOCIETY ACTS OR REACTS.' This is because in the book society is reacting by putting anyone who has some kind of super power into a jail called the 'New Order.' In this jail you cannot use any of your powers due to the fact that the whole jail has a spell on it to the point where it will deactivate their powers. In other words anyone who is different will be sent to some kind of jail. My favorite character Whit is very loquacious in his dreams but other than that not very much in the day.

9/23/10 book blog
In your book, what are some of the ways that your character expresses themselves through their emotions? How do they show love? Anger? Hate? Why is this important to you as a reader?
In my book Whit shows love for his girlfriend because even though she has been missing for months he can't keep his mind off of her. In his dreams she appers to tell him why he is in this crazy place. But before she can she tells him that she will have to see him for real and not just in a dream and that people can be watching and listening. When Witsy is angry her whole body just puffs up in blue, red, and orange flames. It is so cool. When Whit is mad he just lunges towards that person and starts punching him/her. They both show hate by being rude and back talking that person with authority. It's because by the author expressing Whit and Witsy's emotions I can kind of get a sense of who they really are inside.

9.17.10: Week 4
It is important to use our observations/knowledge of the world around us to understand and make meaning out of what we read? Thinking about your experience with the writing excursion, how much importance does your author place on how two characters in your book dress/look? How do you know this?
My author would not spend that much time on explaining how whit and witsy dressed. He would focus on the main idea of the book and not the way they dress. I know this because on the first page of chapter 15, they are getting ready to be sent to this jail for the supernatural. The author did not sit their and explain what the clothing looked like that they had to change into. He would only say they had to change into a jumpsuit and that was it.

9.7.10 - 9.10.10: Week 3
As readers, we need to be able to look at what is happening in the world around us so that we can make connections to what we are reading. Thinking about the world you live in, what connections can you make to your book.
Today in the world we are all falling in love!!! I mean it is something that just happens. We cant control who or what our heart desires. That is what is happening to Jennifer Love Hewitt in her book 'The Day I Shot Cupid!' This book is really similar to life because it is what is happing to me and you right now. We fall in love and they break our heart. That is just how it works. In the book she tells you not to cry over someone that does not love you back. If you look at life and your relationship all your friends tell you the same thing. In the world love hurts and that is how my bookm is related to the world around us!!!

9-3-10 reading response
As we look into how our characters in our books are expressing themselves, how does that, in turn, make you think about how you express yourself?
The book Witch & Wizard is so fascinating. My favorite character whit expresses his self by using attitude. Whit is very brave and has a big attitude. From what i have read so far in my book whit loves to talk back to people with authority. My favorite part in the book is when the big black guy comes to his cell and has handcuffs in his and whit responded by saying "Oh for me??? you shouldn't have." Whit's sister witsy is more of a girl who does not like to have anything to do with trouble. She is a witch and whit is a wizard!!! This makes me realize that many people do express themselves by there attitude and what they will and will not do. I also express myself by the way i dress and what i read and just maybe what I want to do in life!! I feel that I express myself with my attitude and with what i will and will not do. Reading this book is teaching me that their is more then one way to express myself!!

8/27/10 Reading response
Talk about what your book is about. Describe the setting, the main characters and the plot. Think about and discuss what you believe the Universal Theme to be. (This is a basic summary to get you back into the habit of discussing what you are reading with other readers).
The universal theme of my book is that no matter how much you try to change the way you are, the guy that you are with will always find something that is wrong with you. This book is about how Jennifer love Hewitt is a love-alcoholic. She talks about what guys want in a girl and what girls want in a guy. My book really does not have a setting. in the book she does not talk about where she is. But if I was to think of where she might be I would say in here room. The main character's in the book would be Jennifer and he friend. In the book Jennifer is funny and helpful along with the guy in the book that also wrote some stuff to help out the guys. Jennifer seems to always be messing up on something. The plot of my book is that Jennifer falls in love and gets her heart broken. She tells us about the funny things in a relationship and the not so funny things!!
